INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILMS

1. „TOTEM TOONS“ Joas Sebastian Nebe (Germany) http://www.jsnebe.de 10 min 49 sek

Synopsis:

“Totem toons” consist of four video pieces, each connoting a different animal. Nebe uses analogue photographs of abandoned houses on empty street views. Cloud pictures, layered and set into motion are added to the composition. Pairing into doubles, the four pieces work on the theme of mirror stages, and the landscapes of the psyche. The compositional structure of the work leads towards a juxtaposition of alienated outer “corpora” and the bodily inside. As the “totems” emerge during the course of gazing through the polygenic frames, they function as utopian body phantoms and ciphers for tabooed spaces.

2. Marianna and Daniel O'Reilly (England) http://www.mariannaanddaniel.co.uk

Longbridge (2009)  15 min 33 sek
Schadenfreude (2011) 5 min 23
Meta Morph (2011)  5 min 15 sek
The way things really feel (2011) 5 min 4 sek

Synopsis:

We recognise that when the abstract concept is converted into a tangible work it must necessarily become subjected to forces that were alien to it when it remained in the scope of imagination. Just as when one puts one's feelings into words and finds how incapable one is of accurately expressing them there, the concept may become distorted or compromised by the factors involved in making a physical ‘thing’ – a work of art. But this must not seem a deterrent – rather, this should be its justification. The concept must be introduced to the world and not stillborn in the imagination where it becomes frustrated. The process of moving an idea from inside to outside, its enshrinement in technique and form, its encounter with the difficulties of expression, constitutes an encounter with the manifold factors of reality – an affirmation of reality.

3. Maxim Northover (England)

Four Widows (2010) 2 min 57
Telephone Junkies (2010) 2 min 33 sek

4.Follow Me  2:02 min. (2010) Kahori Kamiya  (Japan/New York) www.kahorikamiya.com

Synopsis:

In this video, Follow Me (2010), I started with Netflixing several hundred movies to collect scenes within which an actor/actress/animation character  says “follow me” based on specific situations. I then Twittered the actions or ideas highlighted or implied by these situations. Through this work,  I attempt to interrogate human authority, power relationship in gender, and the need for popularity at the social net working – all connected with the keyword, “follow me.”
Rooted in my background of growing up in Japan as a follower of American culture, such as Hollywood movies, I always made sure whether  I was a correctly social person to follow the stream of the times, news, and trends rather than exploring them originally.  One way to put it is that I was under a type of social-spiritual  totalitarianism. Also, the last twitter status "being and nothingness" answers my question about the worth of human ego.

Bathroom Conductor  3min.   (2009-10)  Kahori Kamiya  (Japan/New York)  www.kahorikamiya.com

Synopsis:

Bathroom Conductor illuminates the power relationship between gender and spiritual totalitarianism of society to  the tempo of the Hungarian Waltz. The audience is treated to footage depicting to instances of mass cultural phenomena such as the Beijing  Olympics, Nazi orchestra, Mass Wedding Ceremonies, and the runways of Paris. These images are interspersed with intimate footage  of personal grooming activity symbolizing the banal daily rituals of everyday life. Meanwhile, the Conductor stands within the super private space of the bathroom, and furiously conducts the constant parade of imagery, turning the inward into the outward. The total  effect creates vivid impressions, and makes caricatures of society’s expectations on what it is to be a socially beautiful person

„Daily Ritual -cutting flowers-“ 4:08 min. (2008) Kahori Kamiya  (Japan/New York) www.kahorikamiya.com

Synopsis:

Daily Ritual-cutting flower- is a reflection on our controlled society and accesses the unspoken agreement in human relationships.  I begin by cutting beautiful randomly selected flowers in a ritualistic manner.
I conclude with a cautionary reading of the event’s surrounding the Tower of Babel by a Dutch speaker,
and it’s slightly changing to literal imagination scene with the rapid speed art auction voice.
The nature of these images and ideas range from the theological to the social and ideological.

5. „GUNKANJIMA“  4:40 min.  Piotr Bockowski (Poland/London)

SYNOPSIS:
Gunkanjima is a symbol of industrial revolution in Asia. The concrete island of the Mitsubishi corporation, where for almost a 100 years -since the end of the XIX century- the concentration camp for Koreans and other nations of the Far East took place. Developing coal from the bottom of the Pacific ocean, it was closed after the economy of Japan changed into oil energy. Now the citizens of Nagasaki call this wreck, which got destroyed by typhoons - "the isle of demons"

6.“Something/the/you“ 4:58 min. (2009) Henry Gwiazda (U.S.A.)

Is there something more beautiful than us?

The process is about the process of life, of our passage of discovery, the results of action versus non-action.

You can never go back.  The lights represent past actions, thoughts, things we move away from to go forward.

„ About/being/history“ 7:34 min.  (2009) Henry Gwiazda  (U.S.A.)

How do we become history?

My work is about the choreography of reality. It's about the way everything moves and is interconnected to create beauty. It shows that each motion, whether it is made by human, animal, object, light or sound, is connected and extended by other motions to compose a phrase, a sentence of great artistic interest. Each small, choreographed scene can be appreciated for itself, but on subsequent viewings, takes on a separate meaning. They become metaphors for our lives, our dreams and ourselves

20:00 - 21:30

Pärnu kunstnike maja / Pärnu artist house (Nikolai 27 II floor)

Marian Kivila presents:

ESTONIAN SHORT FILM

1. MINNA HINT "JAILBIRD"  (2010) 18´50

Documentaryfilm, where just birds speak-screem-sing, observes the journey of an Andalusian bird and bird-catcher from freedom to inprisonment and from there onward...

2. A NAGU ALFA (ANDRES LÕO) ”RAUL VELBAUM”

Dokumentaal Raul Velbaumist (2001) 8`

3. REMO RANDVER "BLUE DIODES" 1´21 JA "I LIVE HERE"  2´ (2010)

Andalusia, due to its touristic industry, is probably one of the internationally best-known spanish regions, but is not just sun, sea and sand. The History of Cinema in Andalusia has been historically limited to the use of the archetype of Andalucian (flamenco, bullfighting, religion, the bandits, a typical Andalusian gentleman, migrants or the image of the Andalusian funny and vague) that was exploded about especially during the decades of 1940 to 1960 and ended in large measure to consolidate the image of topical Andalusia. Moreover, the province of Almeria was the set of legendary western movies, where producers and Italians found an ideal place for their creations, which is the only film of relevance to the arrival of democracy.

However, the Andalusian film has its roots in the early twentieth century, with José Val del Omar as a benchmark and now lives with a burgeoning stage directors like Antonio Cuadri (The heart of the earth), Chus Gutierrez (West), Chiqui Carabantes (Carlos agains the world), Alberto Rodriguez (7 Virgins), Antonio Banderas (The path of the English) or Benito Zambrano (Solas) as well as many succesful short films, supported by national and international criticism.

This Panorama offer a bird-eyes vision of last short films produced in Andalusia
