Three weeks of artistic expression in contemporary music and printmaking

Something important has been taking place every winter in Pärnu, Estonia, and deserves our attention. The Printmaking In Festival combined with the Pärnu Days of Contemporary Music make an enclave of three weeks of explosive creativity and experimentation for artists in various areas of contemporary art: performance, sculpture, painting, audiovisual art, photography, digital media and music, from 8 to 30 of January, 2011.

Both festivals are organized by the  Academia Non Grata and the Estonian Arnolt Schoenberg Society. The Printmaking In Festival initiated originally in the mid 90s in order to introduce the newest explorations of printmaking outside of Estonia’s capital, Tallinn. For several years this festival has been proving that the lack of professional print making equipment (as is the case outside the capital) is not the biggest obstacle in making prints. There has been body-printing, baking-prints, suitcase-printing etc. (the 2005 edition was dedicated to self-made experimental printmaking machines; in 2006 there were experiments from xerox printing to branding bodies).

In 2008, Printmaking In took place together with the Pärnu Days of Contemporary Music as an ongoing dialog of modernist and postmodernist visual art and music. This will be the case also in the 2010 edition and the interdisciplinary relationship between music, theatre and visual art will be studied in lectures, recitals, workshops, discussions, exhibitions, and performances. In addition to modernist music and topical art events, the festival will also delve into the deep structures of modernist music, theatre, dance and visual arts.
